The desert and mountains have a way of making me feel both grounded and expansive.

Something about the vastness of their beauty, the stillness, the silence creates room to see more clearly, while remaining open to possibility.

Leadership asks us to create that same kind of distance, enough to see beyond what we intend and consider what others actually experience.

What does it feel like to walk through your front door?

Not “What does the building look like?” or “What services are listed on the website?” but “What does it feel like to be the person arriving?”

I’ve spent years thinking about whether the spaces, systems, policies, and interactions we create leave people feeling seen, heard, valued, and respected. This week, I’ll explore that question at the National Women’s Shelter Network Conference through a trauma-informed walk-through tool I created for shelter leaders.

The tool was designed for shelters, but the leadership question is universal. People experience our values through more than what we say. They experience them in the welcome they receive, the clarity of a process, the tone of an interaction, the body language used and the small details that communicate: You matter here.

This week, consider choosing one person - an employee, client, volunteer, donor, or partner - and walking through an experience with your organization from their perspective.

What might make them feel welcomed and respected?

Where might they encounter confusion, discomfort, or an unnecessary loss of dignity?

Sometimes the clearest picture of our leadership comes from experiencing what we have built through someone else’s eyes.

Where might greater clarity make your work feel lighter?

Sometimes the answer isn’t more effort, it’s clarity.

More meetings, more explanation, and more personal effort can point to a decision that hasn’t been made, a priority that hasn’t been named, or an expectation that hasn’t been communicated.

Before you add more effort, what needs to be decided, named or communicated more clearly?

Here’s a hint: Start with the thing you have been avoiding.

The Diary of a CEO by Steven Bartlett

I read this book several years ago and had many great takeaways. One of the things I most appreciated most was the reminder that small details create large signals. In branding, marketing, leadership, and customer experience, people use seemingly minor details to judge the quality and credibility of the brand. It is true that what you repeatedly communicate, becomes the brand - visually, verbally, and behaviorally.

Your reputation is shaped by what others experience, not simply by what you intend. It’s imperative as leaders that we develop self-awareness, question the beliefs shaping our behavior, and take responsibility for changing the patterns that limit us. It’s ongoing work and how we close the gap between the leaders we intend to be and the leaders others actually experience.
