Hello.Welcome to Where the Light Continues - Stories and insight for leaders building something that matters. This is the first issue, and it seemed right to start with where I actually am right now. I’ve been a little quiet about what I’ve been up to this year.
Earlier this year, I led a founder to successor transition. After nine years leading the nonprofit I cofounded, I knew I needed some space to unpack that season.
What I didn’t fully anticipate was how much would begin to emerge once I had that space.
For years, so much of what I knew lived in my head.
How to build trust with people who have every reason not to trust systems.
How to advocate for people when systems have made it difficult for them to ask for help.
How to build psychologically safe teams and inclusive spaces.
How to engage boards as partners in the work.
How to lead with presence and clarity when the stakes are high.
How to remain a calm presence amidst emergent and urgent matters.
How to build something from almost nothing and keep building as the complexity and need grows.
This year, I’ve started turning those lessons into tools other leaders can use.
I’ve been developing workshops and frameworks around leadership and executive presence, board engagement, storytelling, trust, and trauma-informed organizational systems.
I’ve advised nonprofit CEOs and boards. I’ve delivered leadership webinars to global corporate audiences. I’ve been invited into more rooms to speak, facilitate, and share what I’ve learned, while intentionally working on becoming an even stronger speaker myself.
Next month, I’ll head to the National Women’s Shelter Network conference with new colleagues, new presentations and practical tools I’ve created for leaders doing work that I came to know so closely.
I’ve also been spending more time in entrepreneurial spaces, having insightful conversations and paying attention to where my experience might be useful next.
And I’m writing. I have thoroughly enjoyed returning to writing.
I’m still figuring out exactly what all of this becomes.
But I’m increasingly clear about what I’m building.
For a long time, so much of this knowledge lived in my head because I was busy doing the work.
Now I get to turn it into something that can help other people do theirs.
I’m paying attention to the rooms, organizations, and conversations where this work can have the most impact.
